World Health Organization Faces Significant Workforce Cuts After US Financial Withdrawal

The international public health organization revealed intentions to cut its workforce by almost a fourth – amounting to more than two thousand positions – by mid-2026.

Financial Crisis Triggers Major Reorganization

The move follows following the US, formerly the organization's biggest contributor, withdrew financial support previously this period.

Washington had been contributing approximately 18% of the agency's overall budget, creating a significant budgetary shortfall.

Projected Staff Cuts

According to organizational projections, the staff is expected to drop from 9,401 posts in early 2025 to around 7,030 by June 2026.

This reduction of 2,371 positions includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and natural attrition.

"This year has been among the toughest in WHO's history, as we undertook a challenging but essential process of prioritization and restructuring," stated the agency's leader.

Budget Gap Persists

This Geneva-based body currently confronts a budget shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, representing nearly a quarter of its total funding.

The amount represents an improvement from a previous estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in spring.

Excluded Funding

The financial calculations exclude a further $1.1bn in expected contributions from current negotiations with various contributors.

The representative for the organization stated that the present unsecured portion of the biennial budget is actually lower than in earlier years, crediting this to multiple reasons:

  • Reduced overall budget size
  • The launch of a new donor outreach campaign
  • An increase in participating countries' required contributions

This restructuring process is now nearing its completion, allowing the organization to progress with a renewed structure.
