Utah Prosecutors File Charges Against Suspect in Charlie Kirk Killing with Aggravated Murder

Utah prosecutors on this week filed charges against Tyler Robinson, the young adult accused of fatally shooting far-right figure Charlie Kirk, with aggravated murder—and stated they will seek the death penalty should he is found guilty.

Charges and Case Circumstances

The exact accusations filed comprise aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and witness tampering. Prosecutor Jeff Gray stated that aggravating circumstances included the victim’s political expression and the attendance of children during the incident.

“I do not choice made lightly,” the prosecutor stated. “And it is a decision was reached based solely on the facts of the case.”

Case Findings and Alleged Intent

Investigators claim that Robinson ordered his housemate to erase damaging text messages and remain silent to police. According to reports, Robinson’s parent informed investigators that her son had grown increasingly ideological and had started shifting toward progressive views, including advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights.

The suspect was reportedly dating his roommate, who was transitioning genders.

Incident of the Killing

Kirk was shot during an event at UVU moments following a remark about trans people and gun violence. Footage of the incident showed the shooting.

Arrest and Evidence

Robinson was arrested the following day after people close to him identified him from released images. He surrendered with the assistance of a associate who was a law enforcement official.

Prior to his surrender, Robinson apparently confessed to the killing in a message on the chat platform, stating: “Everyone, it’s unfortunate, I was responsible at UVU that day.”

Authorities also reported that genetic material matching Robinson was discovered on a towel placed on the rifle believed to have been used in the attack. The weapon was discarded near the university.

Communications and Engraved Ammunition

Additional proof featured a text message from Robinson to his housemate that read: “I had the chance to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to do it.”

Officials also found cartridges with etched inscriptions such as online phrases, video game terms, and lyrics from an anti-fascist anthem. A particular inscription said: “NoTices Bulge OWO What’s This?”

Court Process and Detention

Robinson will stay in custody without bail due to the prosecution’s intent to seek the death penalty. He was scheduled to appear in court for an first appearance.

Gray described the killing as “a national loss,” stating that Kirk was killed while exercising First Amendment rights.
