Top US Lawman Wears Liverpool Necktie at Congressional Session

The nation's top FBI official Kash Patel appeared before the US Senate judiciary committee on Tuesday sporting a tie featuring the logo of English Premier League team Liverpool.

Online Reactions

The choice of neckwear sparked questions on social media. Firstly, it is extremely rare for a public figure to sport a tie with the logo of a business or sports team. Additionally, Patel has not publicly expressed support for Liverpool previously—that is not in words.

That said, he has been pictured sporting Liverpool ties on no fewer than two separate instances. One occasion was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was meeting lawmakers on Capitol Hill following Donald Trump’s electoral win. At the time, he was speculated to be joining the government. Another instance took place roughly five months after, on 9 April 2025, at a press event announcing the arrest of narcotics traffickers by US law enforcement.

A Collection

Notably, the tie used on Tuesday was distinct from the earlier item. The earlier version had broad lines and a subtle logo, while the newer tie boasted narrower bands and a larger logo—identified as the “heritage tie”.

The fact that he possesses several Liverpool ties implies that his selection is not a fluke.

Contentious Proceedings

During Tuesday’s hearing, the atmosphere turned heated on multiple occasions. Patel had a shouting match with US lawmakers Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He stood by his management of the FBI, his dismissal of longtime employees implicated in investigations related to the January 6 events, and a tweet in which he announced that a suspect was in custody for the killing of right-wing figure Charlie Kirk—a statement that proved inaccurate.

“I do not consider it an error,” Patel told the committee. “I see it as working with the public to confirm that there was a subject in custody.”

Political Divide

If Patel does support Liverpool, it would symbolize a stark contrast of ideological allegiances. Being among the US’s foremost law enforcement officers, Patel has been a visible representative of a second Trump administration that has used heavy-handed methods to impact various aspects of society.

This includes raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in open areas that have resulted in the arrest of hundreds of immigrants regardless of their residency or citizenship. It also includes the dispatching of government officers to left-leaning US cities in response to supposed higher crime rates—claims that have been debunked.

Liverpool’s Identity

The team, by contrast, is known to be among the more progressive clubs in the continent, from one of the most left-leaning cities in the UK.

Legendary Liverpool coach Bill Shankly once stated: “I am convinced the only way to live and to be truly successful is by teamwork, with everyone working for each other, everyone helping each other, and everyone having a share of the rewards at the end of the day.”

Although the operations of Liverpool have evolved in modern times, traces of collectivist thinking persist. Former manager JĂŒrgen Klopp, who guided the club to multiple triumphs from 2015 to 2024, summed up his own politics by remarking: “When I succeed, I want others to do well, too. If there’s something I will never do in my life is vote for the conservative party.”

Past Strains

Liverpool’s fans also have a considerable history of opposition toward law enforcement. Much of this stems from the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, which took the lives of 97 Liverpool fans. Initially, police blamed the crowd of hooliganism and intoxication. Subsequently, separate investigations revealed that the stampede was due to serious failures by police, who had deceived the people to transfer responsibility.

The Director’s History

Patel gained attention after the incidents of 6 January 2021, when he promoted a legal defense fund for those arrested in relation to the Capitol attack. A career prosecutor and legal aide to right-wing figures, Patel leveraged his association with the previous Trump government to develop business ventures and a media career. In both roles, he promoted multiple conspiracy theories, including discredited assertions of election fraud and false statements about Covid-19 vaccines.
