The Gunners Victory Powered by Substitutes and Rugby Union Influence
Mikel Arteta believes that the "finishers" in his squad could be even more vital than starters this season—an approach he reveals borrowing from the sport of rugby.
Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard each scored—assisting each other—following their introduction as second-half substitutes to secure a 2-0 victory for Arsenal against Athletic Club in the first UEFA elite competition fixture.
Recent Struggles and Arteta's Faith
The 24-year-old has faced a tough period lately, losing form and dropped to substitute duty, with recent acquisition the English winger chosen on the left wing.
The experienced attacker, meanwhile, has been limited a handful of cameos this season after featuring regularly during the previous term.
Arteta stressed that starting on the bench does not diminish a player's importance, citing similarities with rugby's terminology of impact players.
"These players are at least equally crucial, or even more important," Arteta commented. "The finishers are going to be decisive this season sometimes than those who begin the game."
Squad Depth and Injury Absences
Arsenal find themselves without key players such as Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and the German playmaker due to fitness issues, while the central defender was deemed ready enough for a place on bench.
As a result, the manager to turn to new signings earlier than planned, with five of them named in the lineup against the Bilbao-based outfit.
Arteta admitted that leaving players out is emotionally challenging, but praised the impact of both Martinelli and Trossard after initially benching them.
"Extremely satisfied since it is hard on a personal level to make exclusions," he expressed. "Every time you reveal the line-up, you let down a number of players."
Squad Unity and Confidence Boost
The Brazilian, who has been a key figure under Arteta, experienced a dip in form that led to fan debate about his role in the team.
The winger was aware of the criticism and it dented his confidence, despite scoring double figures last season—featuring a memorable strike in the European quarter-final encounter against the Spanish giants.
Arteta has always shown faith him in big games and was delighted to see the attacker make the difference in the win.
"He fully deserves it," said Arteta. "I admire Gabi. The way he applies himself, dedication, his positivity—everything he offers for the squad."
Teammates ran to congratulate Martinelli after he scored, with the defender gesturing toward the player's name in before the away fans.
"That's the spirit," added. "That's why I love working with them daily. The way they support one another is authentic."
"They really want the success for each other and they appreciate a teammate who works hard every single day like Martinelli has."
"I was certain that he was going to react positively. You challenge him, he elevates to the occasion. These are moments that will hopefully restore his self-assurance—as he is an exceptional player."
