Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track right in his path

The concerning event took place on the third rotation when track officials were observed on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his damaged front wing

Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"

"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two guys running across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a miscommunication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a live track track officials can be authorized to just dash across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"

The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the events

"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the governing body

"In the third rotation, safety personnel were alerted and put on alert to access the circuit and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send officials were rescinded and a double yellow flag was raised in that zone"
