Greater Manchester Jewish House of Worship Assault Fatalities Identified
Two men killed in an assault on a synagogue in Manchester have been identified by law enforcement as Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, aged 66.
Three others are still hospitalized with serious injuries after Jihad Al-Shamie used an automobile into people before using a bladed weapon on Thursday.
The violent incident, which law enforcement has confirmed was a terror-related event, took place during Judaism's holiest day, the holiest day in the Jewish tradition.
The perpetrator, who was fatally shot at the location, was a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian heritage who was not previously known to counter terrorism police, as stated by government sources.
Community Response
"We are devastated," the nation's top rabbinical authority stated.
During a conversation on a major broadcast, he stated: "The tragic incident was an awful blow to us, something which we had apprehensions regarding might happen because of the build up."
The attack was not only "a profoundly troubling moment" for the British Jewish community "but for the entire nation," he continued.
Government Response
"The government's duty is to ensure our Jewish population, our residents can conduct their daily activities with security and assurance," a cabinet minister declared.
"We cannot allow Jewish citizens in our country to feel compelled to live a reduced Jewish identity, that they cannot pursue their activities and follow their beliefs and attend their religious centers in liberty," she continued.
The assailant was not identified to security services, she told broadcasters, and it was "too early" to say if there was a terrorist cell behind the attack.
Investigation Update
The police investigation was "continuing at pace" and there was an increased police presence at religious institutions across the UK.
"Authorities allocate security funding," the official stated, adding: "I think we will have to consider what further actions we can take to deal with growing religious prejudice."
Greater Manchester police confirmed they were assisting the relatives of the two men killed.
"Sincere condolences are with Mr Daulby and Mr Cravitz's loved ones at this incredibly difficult period," law enforcement leadership expressed.
He confirmed that trained family liaison officers were in communication with families and would maintain assistance through the coronial process.
"Whilst there are processes which need compliance, we commit to being mindful of community customs and needs and to guaranteeing that the deceased and their relatives' requests are honored," he continued, mentioning that the both victims were from the Manchester community.
Medical examinations are taking place on Friday, according to government statements.
