England v South Africa – Women's Cricket Global Tournament Starts

Quiet now! The talking is over, at least for the moment, and England’s World Cup is ready to commence. The bad news is, they face a challenging match against South Africa. The good news is, they start with a tough game opposing the Proteas. A win in this match would give England instant momentum and justify the measured self-belief of their pre-tournament chatter.

Pre-Competition Confidence

A superb victory against the Australians during their final preparatory match has increased that confidence, although the standout displays of Alice Capsey (88 not out) alongside Sarah Glenn (claiming 5/32) gave Charlotte Edwards a slight selection headache.

Edwards is known for her success, thus there is no risk of the team having modest ambitions. However, looking broadly they occupy a rare spot where their tournament benchmark is quite obvious.

Tournament Expectations

Falling short of the semis could be a slight surprise, even considering the advances from historically weaker sides. Advancing to the ultimate game in front of the Aussies or Indians, the primary frontrunners to win the competition, would be a serious achievement. If the English side triumphs… no, let’s not go there. It’s far too soon for that sort of talk.

Today’s match begins at half past ten in the morning BST.
